How much does therapy cost and do you accept insurance?

I do accept some insurance plans though there are several reasons why people often choose to pay cash for therapy services rather than using insurance:

  1. Privacy and Confidentiality: Often people prefer to keep their therapy sessions private and off their insurance records. When you pay out of pocket, there’s no involvement of insurance companies, which may help maintain confidentiality.
  2. Flexibility: Paying cash often provides more flexibility in choosing a therapist. You’re not limited to providers within your insurance network, so you can choose a therapist based on factors like specialization, expertise, or personal compatibility rather than just who is covered by your insurance.
  3. No Diagnosis Required: Many insurance plans require a mental health diagnosis for coverage. Often individuals prefer not to receive a formal diagnosis, especially if they’re concerned about stigma or potential implications for things like employment or security clearances.
  4. Avoiding Pre-authorization Requirements: Some insurance plans require pre-authorization for therapy sessions, which can be time-consuming. Paying cash bypasses these administrative hurdles.
  5. Therapist’s Expertise: Some therapists may not accept insurance because of the administrative burden or lower reimbursement rates. These therapists may have specialized training or expertise that clients are willing to pay out-of-pocket for.

Overall, the decision to pay cash for therapy services versus using insurance is a personal one that depends on factors like privacy concerns, financial considerations, treatment preferences, and individual circumstances.

Insurance

If you choose to use insurance, I am an in-network provider for:

  • Aetna
  • BCBS
  • United Student Health

I also accept all HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Savings Account) plans.

If you are unsure of your insurance coverage, we would be happy to check your benefits for you prior to your first appointment. During your initial phone consultation we can discuss what information is needed in order to do this. We will then inform you of what your projected payment will be for your sessions based on your benefits prior to your first appointment. *Please note that co-pays/deductibles at times can be incorrectly quoted by the insurance company and will not be verified until EOBs (Explanations of Benefits) are received. This can take up to several weeks following session attendance. Any outstanding balance will be owed at this time and any credit can be refunded.

If you have an out-of-network insurance, I.e. Cigna, Kaiser… services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance provider. I am happy to provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance provider. Please note, this does not guarantee that your insurance provider will reimburse you for services.

Payment

Session rate payment or co-pays/co-insurance/deductible are due at the time of service.  I accept credit cards as well as HSA/FSA cards.

24-Hour Cancellation Policy:

Once an appointment is scheduled, you will be expected to pay for it in full, unless you provide 24-hours advanced notice of cancellation. Please contact me directly to cancel your appointment.
