How will a therapist help me?

I work collaboratively with clients offering an objective perspective, which is different from a friend or family member who will often have a strong and sometimes biased opinion about what you “should” do. Also, therapists are trained using empirically researched therapeutic techniques and interventions that have been shown effective in working with various symptoms and concerns.

What should I expect sessions with you to be like?

Before our initial session, I will review the paperwork you completed prior to our meeting and clarify any questions. This way, when we meet for that first session I will already know your current concerns from the information you provide that will help me to conceptualize our work such as: the nature of your family relationships growing up; current supports and romantic partnerships; mental and medical health history; substance use; work/academic satisfaction…. Based on the assessment, we will work collaboratively to create your treatment plan. Generally, I use interpersonal therapy techniques that focus on the quality of the therapeutic relationship and strengthening the relationships in the client’s life. I also use Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, as we explore the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors to begin breaking negative patterns and creating new, healthy thought and behavior processes.
